Y no tengo respuesta.

No contestaron.

“I really want the climbing community to wake up and stand up for Human Rights”

Interview with Nasim Eshqi, an Iranian professional woman climber who supports the protests in Iran and stands for women Human Rights everywhere in the world.

This an interview with Nasim. We simply want her voice to be heard.

The interview has been facilitated by Eme and translated by Claudia. Both of them are part of the Association Girls on the Wall.

About Nasim

Thanks for contacting me for this interview to be the voice of Iranian women. I am a full-time climber and I've been climbing for more than 17 years.

I always feel that women can make bigger steps than we actually do. I always have this impression that I am transporting the power, energy, and information from abroad back to Iran when I travel. But I had never thought I would be talking about politics, parties, or religion but then, in the past, I always felt free and I always spoke freely.

I am a climber, but for me this way of life is not only about climbing and going for a drink, for me, it is also about showing others people that they can do climbing too and feel powerful.

Nowadays, we have the situation where the morality police beats, kills, and tortures more than ever, although it has been happening for a while now. But I feel that whatever happens in the Middle East, or in countries that have less economic power, does not get any attention. It’s like these people are not human at all. Iran is a rich country and has a lot of resources and it looks like this is the only thing that Western society cares for.

But what if Western countries start to talk about human rights? They do pay attention to the oil but what about the people? They can have the oil, and they can buy the oil, but they don't need to have blood on their hands. Because if they're silent, they are with the regime and they are killing.

So, what I feel as a climber, who climbs the mountains, and I see myself as very powerful always, I just think this cannot be that I am silent in this condition too.

About the protests.

When this girl, Mahsa Amini, got killed by the morality police, and she was not the first one, all the women in Iran, all the activists, everybody became very angry. They were fed up with this situation, with this system, because this girl was an example of every innocent girl. She had no idea about politics: she was not in the left wing or right wing, she was not in contact with any feminists, she was not in contact with any foreign activists. She was just a very innocent person walking out of the metro station to go to the park with her brother. And morality police took her, arrested her, and then, obviously, she got beaten in her head and that she got brain death went to the coma and died.

So it was just a big shock. I think the whole of Iran cried that day. And we just felt this is not possible. So then people got into the streets and they started the protests.

The hospital who reported about the condition of Mahsa Amini, forced by the government, had to delete what they posted on their website or media. Finally, they published that Mahsa Amini had a heart attack and that she was suffering from a disease before and she just got a sudden heart attack and it was nobody’s fault. They made some fake videos, they spread the news outside of Iran etc. The nurse who took the pictures and the reporter, who wrote this news on her platform both got arrested and we don't know where they are now. So, people came out on the streets and we, women, are leading now.

At this moment a lot of people got killed and arrested. We have more than 15,000 people arrested now. We have more than 1000 people dead. And just for what? Just because they say we want freedom? We want to have the basic freedom, basic human rights. In Europe, when you say human rights, it means a totally different thing, because the basic ones are already secured. But in Iran, we do  not have even the basic part of it.

In Islamic regime in Iran, women have no right to sing, they have no right to play theater, they have no right to do a lot of different sports. As a woman you just have to make children and and keep yourself as stupid as you can. As a woman you know nothing, you don't study, you don’t read any poem, no book, nothing. So, in this situation, what can you teach to your children? Nothing. Then your children will be the ones who can get cheated as easily as possible by this Islamic regime.

Islamic regime wants women only to make soldiers for their aims. Because these children will not be thinking anymore and those are the ones who will become suicide bombers and they will do terrorist attacks whenever the Islamic regime wants. It has been already happening for 43 years, but now it's like a wound that is open and it will not get closed anymore. So now, our people, they feel they don't have life anymore, so they don't have any fear. They just go in front of the police, and they say, "Kill me because I don't have a life."

About human rights and politics.

Our government has a seat in the United Nations defending women's rights. We want the UN to kick out our government out of the UN. We don't want him there. So that's a first step. And if it happens, then we can sort out other things.

Our regime is the one who supports and gives weapons and money to the Taliban. So we feel responsible for the lack of human rights in countries like Afghanistan. Because they used to live almost better than us. And what happened? You know, the name of Afghanistan does not exist anymore. It's called Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Now it's two countries. And if we don't stop Iranian regime, then you will get the Islamic Republic of Turkey, the Islamic Republic of China, the Islamic Republic of Spain. You don't want this. So, we Iranian people, we feel that we have to change this regime. If we do that, Afghan girls and women will be free. And lots of girls and women in Europe also. We will have an impact on the European people too.

There are liberal wings, almost all of the European ones, who deal with our regime. And the Europeans voted for them. And the same liberal governments are having deals with the dictator regime and this fascist system in Iran.

So I want to ask… Where is the left wing? Why is the left wing not talking? But there is no answer. I'm so happy if I see a speech or a talk from the left wing in European countries, but they prefer to be silent because they know that there are other businesses behind. They are waiting for their deal and their benefits afterwards.

About the climbing community.

When I started to talk with my sponsors, I asked them to talk about this situation, because they are my sponsors, they have to be my voice. One of them still never talked. The other one did. But even though they talked, it was very difficult to convince them, to explain the reality because it's not easy with all the news of 43 years, all the media, they don't believe that what is happening in Iran is real. I have to explain a lot that this is not political propaganda. This is not an economic problem or protest either. This is not anything related to left or right. This is human rights. And if you're a climber, if you do sport, what is the aim of doing sports for you then? What? To get united or to ignore each other?

These days, very often, what I see in climbers is that they are, most of them, just so lazy to know something more than the grade of that route in that country that is their project.

They see themselves as very small because climbers became weak in their mindset in terms of feeling that they have an impact. The companies, the climbing companies are turning us to numbers. We, sponsored climbers, are getting turned into an advertisement, a moving advertisement. So, we wear their clothes, we move, and we do nothing with a real impact and we are just happy that we are sponsored. And this is what I see that we are getting at. Even if the climbing companies didn't want it, that's what is happening now.

I really want the climbing community to wake up. I want them all to wake up. When I wrote on my Instagram, when I wrote that we need their voices, when I wrote directly to some famous climbers, they did not answer. And when I called a lot of climbers directly and I asked them to be our voice, a lot of them just put in one IG story and that’s all. So, okay, thank you for including the story, and, maybe, motivating other climbers to do something. But do you really know what is happening in Iran? Are you really involved?

I know that a lot of climbers muted my Instagram account because they cannot see what I post. They cannot see my stories because it's too violent for them and it will disturb their mindset for climbing their grade, their project. And this is just not possible to handle. That's why the climber community has to be more aware of what is happening and, finally, make their move.

They have to do otherwise they are not real mountain climbers. They are not connected to nature, to the world. They are just another silenced voice that supports Iranian regime.

However, I must say that also, in between, a lot of climbers supported me. I can see a lot of climbers who post news and stories every day and I really appreciate that. I feel like, maybe, not the whole climbing community is sleeping - some of them are awake.

We have a saying: “if someone is sleeping, we can wake him up, but if someone is pretending to sleep, we cannot wake him up ever”, and I think climbers don't pretend, they're just asleep.

I’ll continue to have more and more interviews to spread the news, to raise awareness, and to show other people, doesn’t matter their gender, that their actions matter.

We are more powerful than our politicians because we are the ones who choose them, who can question them and ask them why they are not reacting. So, when politicians face questions from their own citizens, they will have to answer and that will make them take real actions toward the goals they have been chosen for.
